This gland has four main functions, including the absorption and transport of iodine, the production and secretion of thyroglobin, the binding of iodine to thyroglobin in order to produce thyroid hormones, and the secretion of thyroid hormones into the circulatory system.
According to doctors, thyroid disorders are one of the most common gland disorders, especially in women, and cause complications including infertility. Thyroid disorders in men also cause short stature or delayed puberty during puberty, and sexual dysfunction in youth. In an interview with IRNA’s science reporter on Monday, Dr. Simin Zafardoost pointed out that controlling thyroid disorders during pregnancy is very important, adding: “If this disease is not controlled during pregnancy, it can have very adverse effects on the fetus and mother.”

.

This surgeon and obstetrician-gynecologist stated: “Miscarriage, stillbirth and intrauterine death, premature birth of the child, and even gestational hypertension and anemia are more common in women who suffer from thyroid disorders during pregnancy than in other mothers.
” Zafardoost advised women who wish to become pregnant to control their thyroid function before pregnancy.
He continued: “In addition to the possibility of infertility, thyroid dysfunction can manifest itself with different symptoms such as changes in body posture, concentration, disorders in blood lipids, heart rate, and body temperature.”

***Thyroid disorders are 4 to 5 times more common in women than in men***

He pointed out the prevalence of thyroid disorders in women and said: Thyroid disorders are 4 to 5 times more common in women than in men, and one of the reasons for this is the higher prevalence of autoimmune disorders in women.
The Infertility Fellowship, noting that taking medications such as multivitamins and calcium and iron supplements during pregnancy interferes with the absorption of levothyroxine (thyroid pills), said: It is better for pregnant women who take hypothyroid pills and multivitamins to leave at least 3 to 4 hours between taking these medications.
Zafardoost said: Women who suffer from hypothyroidism should have their thyroid under control during pregnancy, and their medication dosage may increase during this period.

***Hypothyroidism increases the risk of miscarriage***

He considered hypothyroidism to be one of the major thyroid problems and stated: “Hypothyroidism during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage and this disease increases the risk of miscarriage”. Zafardoost added: “If hypothyroidism occurs in girls before puberty, it can cause a delay in their sexual development and in some cases, it can even cause premature puberty in these girls”. He considered autoimmune diseases to be the most common cause of hypothyroidism in women of reproductive age and said: “Antibodies against the thyroid are produced in their bodies, which causes hypothyroidism”. The surgeon and obstetrician-gynecologist declared hyperthyroidism to be another common thyroid disorder and said: “Hyperthyroidism can be associated with ovulation disorders in women, which reduces the fertility of these people”.
He continued: “The prevalence of hyperthyroidism in the general population is 1.5 percent, but in women with infertility, this amount reaches 2.3 percent.” These statistics also show that hyperthyroidism affects fertility. Zafardoost, pointing out that the need for thyroid hormones increases in pregnant women, said: “The need for thyroid hormones in pregnant women increases by 30 to 50 percent.”
According to the Minister of Health and Medical Education, one of the serious problems of young couples is infertility, so that there are about three million infertile couples in the country who must be provided with the necessary medical services, and in total, 15 percent of the country’s marriages are associated with infertility.

Thyroid Disorder and Reduced Fertility A member of the Subspecialty Center for Infertility Treatment at the Ibn Sina Research Institute said: Thyroid disorders, whether hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, in women lead to impaired ovulation and can reduce women’s fertility.
