But, what is the best age to have a child? According to research from Aarhus University in Denmark, it’s just over 35. In a study of 4,741 Danish mothers, being older when raising children between the ages of 7 and 11 was linked to fewer emotional, social and behavioral problems. The average age at which women have children in Denmark is 30.9, and the proportion of children born to mothers over 40 has quadrupled since 1985. The average age of women having children in England and Wales is 30.3, and the rate has been rising for older women since the mid-1970s, according to the Office for National Statistics.
Women who delay having children tend to be more educated, financially secure and in more stable relationships than younger mothers. Can these factors alone explain differences in childbearing?
But the solution!
The study suggests that the cause goes beyond these few factors. Older mothers are more emotionally mature, more forgiving, and more flexible in their parenting. These factors encourage a kind of empowering and authentic parenting style, one that balances reasoning with the application of behavioral and moral limits. The researchers, in this study conducted in Denmark, found that older mothers (over the age of 33) were less likely to physically or verbally punish their children. They were generally more patient and less likely to resort to strict discipline. However, 15-year-old children in the study also faced the same level of emotional problems, regardless of their mothers’ age.

This study is not just a beacon of the benefits of older mothers.
Last month, a study from the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Childbirth found that children born to older mothers performed better on tests of cognitive ability than those born to younger mothers.
The results of these tests can be used as a predictor of their children’s future educational achievement and health.
However, while these women had fewer problems with childbirth, it should be noted that infertility is more common among older women. Becoming a mother at an older age is not always a good thing.
