The Negative Impact of Smoking on the Fetal Liver

Doctors have warned that smoking during pregnancy has a negative impact on the fetus’s liver.
In this study conducted on stem cells, experts from the University of Edinburgh’s Medical Sciences have discovered the impact of smoking damage on the fetus. According to them, the set of chemicals in cigarettes is dangerous for developing liver cells.
Experts from the University of Edinburgh have developed a method to study the effect of maternal smoking on liver tissue. These experts also found that cigarette chemicals have different effects on male and female fetuses.
In this study, they used pluripotent stem cells, which have the ability to transform into other types of cells, to produce fetal liver tissue.
The study revealed that a combination of chemicals, such as those found in cigarettes,
is more damaging to the fetal liver than a single hazardous substance.
The liver is essential for clearing the body of toxins and plays
an important role in regulating metabolism, according to the BBC.
Smoking, which contains around 7,000 chemicals,
can affect fetal organs and cause lasting damage, the BBC reported.
