Those who are ready to have children or are thinking about having children are certainly accustomed to certain lifestyles and habits. When it comes to reproductive health, you know that the most important factors to consider are things like a healthy diet, reducing stress levels, and taking prenatal vitamins. Beyond these commonly recommended factors, there are choices you make every day that can have a big impact on fertility.
As a fertility specialist and acupuncturist, my philosophy is that I see my clients as a whole person who needs to take control of their day-to-day lives. I usually find blind spots that don’t require much insight to change. Below, I want to explain to you five habits that are overlooked every day and that have a negative impact on fertility.

1- Artificial Light and Sleep Deprivation

Stick to a relaxing bedtime routine and have a regular nighttime ritual to help boost your fertility by reducing stress. The quality of your rest is also important for your overall health and fertility. We sleep better in the dark, so turn off the lights (especially screens and fluorescent lights) before bed and consciously plan for your bedtime. If you can’t avoid light, try using blackout curtains or a blindfold. Also, try sleeping without a clock on the weekends to get a sense of exactly how many hours of sleep you need.

2- Vitamin D and Sunlight

Research has shown that this vitamin is important for women who are trying to conceive. If you’re not sure if you’re getting enough vitamin D, ask your doctor for a test. A blood test can show whether you’re getting enough or if you need to take more. Getting some sun (with sunscreen) every day can help you get some vitamin D and boost your fertility.

3- Body Weight

Sometimes it’s not a good idea to go to the gym every day or double the amount of time you do it. A very high BMI is a major fertility problem, but being underweight can have the same effect. Couples should discuss their weight, diet, and exercise with their doctor before trying to conceive. Your doctor can help you figure out what a healthy weight is for you.

4- Exposure to Phthalates and Plastics

While avoiding plastic completely is a feat, reducing your exposure to it can also
have a significant impact on your fertility.
A large amount of plastic enters our lives every day,
from food containers to plastic bags or packages.
Constant exposure to these items disrupts the ability of the human reproductive system to regulate.
Instead of plastic packages, use paper bags and glass containers.
Changing habits to have healthy fertility requires that you consider your entire life. Although each of the factors mentioned may have a small value, together they can make a significant difference. I hope that by considering these habits, you will help your overall health in addition to your fertility.

Low Levels of Anti-Anxiety Hormones Cause Postpartum Depression

 

Pregnant women with low levels of the anti-stress hormone allopregnanolone are at risk of developing postpartum depression.
Researchers at Johns Hopkins University in the US say that pregnant women with low levels of the anti-stress hormone allopregnanolone in the second trimester of pregnancy are at a higher risk of developing postpartum depression. Postpartum depression affects the initial bond between mother and child.
According to the study, women with levels of the hormone allopregnanolone of about 3.75 nano-grams per milliliter are 33 percent more likely to develop this disorder. While a woman with 7.5 nano-grams per milliliter of this hormone has a 1.5 percent risk of developing postpartum depression.
According to the researchers, for every nano-gram per liter increase in allopregnanolone, the risk of postpartum depression decreased by 63 percent.
The risk was also much higher in women with behavioral disorders such as major depression or bipolar disorder.
In this study, the research team studied 60 pregnant women between the ages of 18 and 45,
all of whom had previously been diagnosed with behavioral disorders.
Using blood samples, the researchers measured the levels of the hormones progesterone
and allopregnanolone, which is produced by the breakdown of progesterone.
Allopregnanolone is known for its calming and anti-anxiety effects.
No relationship was found between progesterone levels in the second or third trimester of pregnancy
and the likelihood of postpartum depression.
However, the researchers found an association between postpartum
depression and low levels of allopregnanolone in the second trimester.
